New Spice and Wolf Adaptation
The new anime adaptation of Spice & Wolf, titled “Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf,” is set to premiere in Japan on April 1, 2024. If you’re in the United States, you can catch it on Crunchyroll for premium members starting on April 2.
The new adaptation has been dubbed in English. The two leads are reprising their roles from the original 2008 anime’s dub. The new dialogue has a much better flow and tact, making it a delightful experience for fans of the series!

The Books
The show is based on the light novel series by Isuna Hasekura and character designs by Juu Ayakura.
- The series consists of 24 volumes published by ASCII Media Works under their Dengeki Bunko imprint since February 2006.
- The first novel in the series won the Silver Prize in the Dengeki Novel Prize competition in 2005, placing third.
- Yen Press holds the license to translate and release the series in English.
Story
- The story follows a traveling merchant named Kraft Lawrence who peddles various goods from town to town to make a living.
- During his journey, he encounters a pagan wolf-deity girl named Holo. She appears as a fifteen-year-old girl but possesses a wolf’s tail and ears.
- Lawrence and Holo start traveling together, and her wisdom helps increase his profits. However, her true nature draws unwanted attention from the church.
Old Anime
The original anime adaptation of Spice and Wolf was produced by Imagin. It aired during the Winter 2008 season and consisted of 13 episodes.
The second season of the anime, titled “Spice and Wolf II,” aired 12 episodes between July 9 and September 24, 2009. But there was a studio change as Brain’s Base took over the animation production instead of Imagin.
New Anime
The new adaptation is being produced by studio Passione.
Studio Passione is known for its diverse portfolio, tackling genres ranging from romance to horror, and its willingness to take on unique and sometimes controversial projects.
