Yellowstone Geyser Erupts

What Happened?

Recently, there was a surprising eruption in Yellowstone National Park’s Biscuit Basin on July 23, 2024. This hydrothermal explosion sent steam, water, and rocks shooting into the air, causing visitors to scramble for safety. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but the boardwalk in the area was damaged.

Hydrothermal explosions like this one are less common and not as well understood as the regular geyser eruptions, such as those from Old Faithful. These events occur when underground passageways become clogged, causing heated, pressurized water to turn into steam and explode. Scientists are working on improving monitoring systems to better predict such eruptions in the future.

Is it safe?

Visiting Yellowstone’s geysers can be a thrilling experience, but it’s important to follow safety guidelines to ensure a safe visit. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Stay on Designated Paths: Always stay on the boardwalks and designated trails. The ground around geysers and hot springs can be thin and unstable.
  • Keep a Safe Distance: Maintain a safe distance from geysers and hot springs. The water can be extremely hot and can cause severe burns.
  • Follow Park Regulations: Pay attention to all park signs and ranger instructions. They are there to keep you safe.
  • Be Prepared for Sudden Changes: Geysers can erupt unexpectedly. Be aware of your surroundings and be prepared to move quickly if necessary.
  • Supervise Children Closely: Ensure that children are always supervised and understand the importance of staying on the paths and away from the hot springs.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy the beauty and wonder of Yellowstone’s geysers safely.
