In November 2023, a Florida sheriff’s deputy mistook the sound of an acorn hitting his patrol cruiser for a gunshot. Believing he had been shot, the deputy fired multiple times at the SUV where a handcuffed Black man was sitting in the backseat. Fortunately, the man was not injured during the incident. The deputy resigned following an internal affairs investigation, which found that his use of force was “not objectively reasonable.” The sheriff’s office has since incorporated this incident into training for other deputies12.
