What Happened
On January 16, 2025, SpaceX launched its Starship rocket from its Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, for its seventh test flight. The rocket successfully lifted off and achieved stage separation between the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage. However, shortly after separation, around eight minutes into the flight, the Starship upper stage experienced a failure, leading to what SpaceX described as a “rapid unscheduled disassembly,” which is essentially an explosion.
This incident resulted in debris falling over the Caribbean, specifically near the Turks and Caicos Islands, causing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to activate a “debris response area” to manage air traffic, and reports of property damage in the region prompted an investigation. The Super Heavy booster, on the other hand, successfully returned to the launch pad and was caught by the launch tower’s mechanical arms, marking another successful test of this aspect of the system.
Preliminary findings suggest that the explosion might have been due to a fire caused by a leak of liquid oxygen or methane, leading to excessive pressure in the cavity above the ship’s engine firewall. The FAA has grounded the Starship pending a mishap investigation to determine the exact causes and to outline corrective actions for future launches.
